Google Android could take over Apple iOS in market shares for tablets by 2015, according to new research.

Market analysis firm IDC found that Android shipped 44.6% of tablets during the fourth quarter of 2011. The Apple iPad accounted for 54.6%, dropping from 61.5% in the previous quarter.

However, with Apple selling 15.4 million tablets purely in the last quarter, Apple doesn’t need to worry too much about its competitors, such as Microsoft, Amazon and RIM.

Tablet sales in general have significantly increased by 56.1%, selling 28.2 million units at the end of 2011, up from 15.8 million in Q3.

Tom Mainelli, research director of Mobile Connected Devices, said: “As the sole vendor shipping iOS products, Apple will remain dominant in terms of worldwide vendor unit shipments. However, the sheer number of vendors shipping low-priced, Android-based tablets means that Google’s OS will overtake Apple’s in terms of worldwide market share by 2015.”

Despite the news that the iPad could drop within in the next few years, IDC are convinced that iOS will still remain the market leader in revenues through to 2016 onwards.
