Apple Records 15 Billionth App Store Download
The App Store has been around for three years. In the first
two-and-a-half years 10 billion apps were downloaded, but it’s taken just six months for the next
five billion to be downloaded.
Apple has announced the milestone today claiming that the
app store now contains 425,000 apps with 100,000 of those designed specifically for the iPad.
Apple boasted that it has shelled out 5 billion to developers in the three
years since the app store opened and if the rate of growth continues, much
more will paid out. However, some developers will argue that the 30 percent
commission Apple takes on paid-for apps is not exactly fair – but we’re unlikely
to see that figure reduced any time soon.
“In just three years, the revolutionary App Store has grown
to become the most exciting and successful software marketplace the world has
ever seen,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide
Product Marketing. “Thank you to all of our amazing developers who have filled
it with over 425,000 of the coolest apps and to our over 200 million iOS users
for surpassing 15 billion downloads.”
At this rate we’ll be reporting the 20 billionth download in
a month or two…
