Microsoft reportedly bringing out Power BI to mobile apps

Microsoft’s business intelligence (BI) tool, Power BI, is being tested and prepared for mobile devices with an iOS app, according to reports.

Enterprise AppsTech has been anticipating an update such as this for some time, after news on Microsoft’s business intelligence suite, pumped in for Office 365 last year, went rather quiet.

According to a report from Venture Beat, testers received an email this week offering a personal app invite. “Get exclusive early access to the Power BI for iOS app and start exploring Power BI dashboards and reports on your mobile devices – anywhere, anytime,” it reads.

Power BI’s main use case is off Excel, being able to create more effective data visualisation than on the spreadsheet tool using the likes of Power Map. Microsoft’s plans to utilise it arrived back in July 2013, but updates have been forthcoming in recent months, including adding filtering and custom map features.

Last year Ovum analyst Madan Sheina hinted at Microsoft’s mobile future, pre-Satya Nadella taking over as CEO. “The momentum of Office 365 holds ample opportunity and an anchoring point for alignment with its cloud, mobile and services initiatives,” he wrote. “Microsoft hopes the net result will be to deliver an efficient, cohesive BI portfolio that offers comprehensive access to, and easy navigation and manipulation of, integrated data via an analysis-ready Excel spreadsheet.”

This is yet another step in that direction, however the prevailing wind is that while companies see mobile BI as a competitive advantage, they’re not doubling down on that commitment. Research from the Aberdeen Group last year found that a “more process-oriented approach to mobile analytics” was key to success.
