NVIDIA is sending out a new OTA update for the SHIELD Android TV box, and it adds at least one feature people have been anxious to get. When the latest update hits your device, you’ll finally be able to use apps with a mouse cursor. There are also optimizations for new games and a number of Marshmallow bug fixes.

Here’s the changelog for SHIELD Android TV 3.1.

  • Optimizations for New Games
  • Adds mouse navigation using SHIELD controller’s right stick. This feature is supported automatically in apps that don’t use the right stick. Example: Google Chrome browser (install from Google Play store using a PC).
  • Marshmallow functionality and stability improvements such as external USB drive detection, FTP write access, HDMI-CEC, idle/sleep stability, SD card formatting, mouse support, and more.
  • Monthly Android security updates, including the March 2016 partner security bulletin.

NVIDIA didn’t list the games that are getting new optimization, but has little images for reach in the release notes. They appear to be Borderlands, Real Racing 3, Paralax, Super Mega Baseball, The Walking Dead: Michone, and Puddle for SHIELD games. On the GeForce Now side are LEGO: Jurassic World, SOMA, Sonic All Stars Racing, Murdered, Sleeping Dogs, and Warhammer: Space Marine.

The mouse support is interesting in v3.1. It’s handled by the right controller stick. It will be available in any app that doesn’t use that for something else. So, why not use the touchpad on the controller? It turns out Android TV doesn’t support touchpads.

The update should be available on your SHIELD right now if you check for updates. The update is about 800MB in size.
